Election Information

The Town Secretary’s Office is responsible for conducting municipal elections as prescribed by the Election Code of the State of Texas and Town of Prosper’s Town Charter.

Per the Town Charter, the governing and lawmaking body of the Town shall consist of the Mayor and six Council Members who shall be elected for terms of three years. All places, including the Mayor, will be elected at large. No person shall serve as Mayor or as a Council Member for more than three consecutive elected terms. No person shall serve as Council Member and Mayor (combined) for more than eighteen consecutive years.

Council Members shall be:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • A citizen of the United States
  • A qualified voter of the Town
  • Reside and have resided for at lest twelve months preceding the election within the corporate limits of the Town.

The Town of Prosper is situated in two counties—Denton and Collin County. Please click on the appropriate link to determine if you are registered to vote in Denton LINK or Collin County LINK. In order to vote in the May 12, 2012 general election, a citizen must be registered to vote no later than April 12, 2012.

Early voting by Personal Appearance – April 30th through May 5th

The early voting by personal appearance begins Monday, April 30th through Saturday, May 5th, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday, May 7th and Tuesday, May 8th will be extended hours for early voting, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Prosper Municipal Chambers located at 108 W. Broadway Street.

Election Day – May 12, 2012

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, qualified registered voters of the Town of Prosper will cast their ballot for the purpose of electing Town Council Member, Place 2 and Town Council Member, Place 6. The hours of the polling location on Election Day will be 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Prosper Community Library. (Reynolds Middle School)

February 4, 2012 First day to file an application for a place on the ballot.
(Applications may not be left at Town Hall. They must be accepted in person by the Town Secretary or by a representative appointed by the Town Secretary. Applications dropped off while not being personally accepted will be returned).
March 5, 2012 Deadline to file an application for a place on ballot
(Must be received by 5 p.m.)
March 7, 2012 Drawing for place on ballot at 9 a.m. in Town Hall
March 8, 2012 Last day for a candidate to withdraw application for a place on the ballot.
(Must be received in writing by 5 p.m.)
April 12, 2012 Last day to register to vote in order to be able to vote in May 12, 2012 election.
April 12, 2012 “30th Day Before” (Title XV) Report No. 1 due.
April 30, 2012 Early voting by personal appearance begins Monday, April 30th thru Saturday, May 5th, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Extended hours will be Monday, May 7th and Tuesday, May 8th, from 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Early Voting locations will be at Prosper Municipal Chambers at 108 W. Broadway Street. Denton County registered voters may early vote at Denton County Elections Division, 401 W. Hickory Street, Denton, TX.
May 4, 2012 “8th Day Before” (Title XV) Report No. 2 due.
May 8, 2012 Last day to vote early by personal appearance.
May 12, 2012 ELECTION DAY 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

May 22, 2012 Official canvass of returns and oaths of office by newly elected officials. Provide statement of elected official’s papers to new candidates. Issue Certificate of Election to new council members.
July 16, 2012 July Semi-annual candidate/officeholder (C/OH) campaign finance report due (Title XV).
