February 24, 2016

Nine local and area businesses have signed on as sponsors of the seventh annual Prosper Fishing Derby, set for Saturday, Feb. 27 at the pond at Frontier Park from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Academy Sports and Outdoors, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Kona Ice, Lake Management Services, Mathnasium of Prosper, Mooyah, Suddenlink, V&A Lawn Care and Your Fishing Reeltor have generously agreed to act as sponsors of the family-friendly event.

Even though there is no charge to participate in the Derby, pre-event registration at is highly encouraged. Registration will remain open through Thursday, Feb. 25

Anglers are reminded to arrive with their own equipment and bait. The pond has been stocked with rainbow trout along with a variety of other species of fish. Catch-and-keep rules apply for any trout, whereas catch-and-release rules apply to the other species.

Frontier Park is located on Frontier Parkway, just west of the BNSF railroad tracks. Parking is available on the lots near Windmill Playground and the pavilion. As construction continues in the area, safety dictates using the sidewalk to reach the pond.

Licensing requirements are suspended for the duration of the derby. However, fishing before and after the event requires a valid fishing license for those 17 years of age and older. Licenses can be purchased at retailers with a hunting or outdoor sports department.
