[ARCHIVED] First Street Accelerated Road Project Update

Town of Prosper

UPDATE (August 4, 2023):
The Town of Prosper has been coordinating with TxDOT and Collin County to ensure the traffic signal at First St. and FM 2478 (Custer Rd.) is operational for the first day of school at Walnut Grove High School on August 9. The signal is scheduled to go into flash operation today, August 4, flashing yellow on Custer Rd. and flashing red on First St./Wilmeth. After a 3-day flash period, it will be fully operational on August 8.

First Street's paving for two-way traffic between Coit and Custer is complete, with striping to be installed over the weekend and finished on August 7, ready for traffic on August 8. Founders Academy's driveway on Custer Road will be completed on August 7, available for exit-only traffic beginning August 8.

The Prosper Police Department will also be on location directing traffic to ensure smooth flow during school opening and dismissal.

Thank you for your patience as the Town of Prosper, TxDOT and the contractor has and continue to accelerate this project. We wish everyone a great first day of school!

UPDATE: (July 21, 2023)
As families prepare for the start of another school year, the Town is working diligently to ensure that motorists have access to Walnut Grove High School by the first day of school.  The expansion of First Street to a four-lane roadway has been on the Town’s long-term Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for several years, with an original construction date slated for 2024. Upon the Prosper Independent School District’s decision to open Walnut Grove High School a year early, the Town Council agreed to accelerate the road project to accommodate the new school.  Mario Sinacola & Sons Excavating, Inc., was awarded the contract last fall and construction has been ongoing since October 2022.  The Sinacola team has committed to having one eastbound and one westbound lane of concrete roadway between Coit Road and Custer Road complete and open to the public by August 8.  Throughout the project, representatives from the Town of Prosper, Prosper ISD, Mario Sinacola & Sons, and Pogue Construction (the contractor for WGHS) have held regular collaboration meetings to facilitate the completion of the first two lanes.  The remaining two lanes are scheduled for completion in Spring of 2024.

Project Milestones:

Week of 7/10:

  • Week of July 10,  traffic was shifted to the new pavement from Coit Road to Townlake Drive and it is now open to eastbound traffic only.

Week of 7/17:

  • New pavement from Custer Road to Whitley Place Drive, and this section will remain two-way.
  • New pavement from Whitley Place Drive to the western driveway of Walnut Grove High School, and this section remains eastbound traffic only.

Week of 7/24:

  • Installation of new pavement on the south side of First Street from Coit to Townlake.

Week of 7/31:

  • Installation of new pavement from Townlake Drive to Southerland Boulevard, connecting to both sides of the bridge.
  • Installation of an additional southbound lane on Coit Road north of First Street to provide a longer left turn lane and additional room for through traffic.

Week of 8/7:

  • Completion of striping and signage installation prior to opening to traffic.

Before the first day of school at the new Walnut Grove High School, the contractor will have completed the following improvements:

    • 4 lanes of First Street from Coit Road to west Townlake Drive to provide additional capacity at the Coit Road/First Street intersection.
    • 2 lanes of First Street from west of Townlake Drive to Custer Road, allowing for two-way traffic with one lane in each direction.
    • Additional southbound lane on Coit Road north of First Street.
    • TxDOT will also finish the traffic signal at First Street and Custer Road.

Please note the project will remain an active construction zone until the contractor completes all four (4) lanes between Coit Road and Custer Road. The anticipated completion date is Spring 2024. Please plan your routes accordingly. Find more updates on this and other projects by visiting the Town’s CIP Dashboard at prospertx.gov/projects
